Dear Year 9 students

Hello everyone 🙂 I hope your last week of term went well, I’ve heard great reports about you all!

I apologise for not getting your exam preparation notes to you during that week. I hope this will help you to prepare for week one, term four. As you know, I will be on the Bali mission trip.

Year 9 Exam:

Short Story:

You will need to be able to read a passage of a short story and identify some elements that work to convey meaning. Some examples might be:

Characterisation

Metaphor

Simile

Tone

Setting

Poetry:

You will need to discuss some elements of “The Highwayman.” Consider:

Symbolism

Language (definitions)

Imagery (Similes, Metaphors, personification)

Alliteration

Assonance

Rhythm & Rhyme

Persuasive Writing

You will be required to write a short persuasive essay in response to a given topic. For example: “Books are better than TV.”

Novel Study

Consider some of the themes we have been looking at so far in The Hunger Games, particularly: power, dysfunctional families, the role of reality TV and camera surveillance in today’s society. What have been the themes in the feature articles we have looked at this term and how do they relate to the world around us? (This will not apply to all students). Also consider some elements of the novel:

Characterisation

Genre

Setting

Conflict

You will be asked some comprehension questions from the novel between chapters 1-10.

Viewing

Review the ideas we discussed regarding dust jackets. You will have to apply your understandings to an unseen dust jacket or two.
